History

 

The Faculty of Dentistry of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences and Health Services was established in 1969 with six Iranian professors and a number of foreign professors, headed by Dr. Bahram Javid, and was set up in the Shahid Faghihi Hospital in Shiraz.

The college admitted its first group of students in 1970 with 18 students. With the development of educational activities, the college was transferred to the Postchi Ophthalmology Clinic and then to the former aircraft building in front of Saadi Hospital (Shahid Faghihi).

 

In 1976, all educational as well as clinical activities of the school, were centered in the affiliated dental clinic building of the school located in west corner of Sooratgar Street at the intersection of Zand Boulevard .The building had a total of thirty-five dental units.

 

At that time, faculty members were predominantly Indian, Pakistani, European, and American nationals who withdrew after the glorious Islamic Revolution. The number of faculty members was dropped to eight assistant professors and instructors. As the activities progressed, the school moved to its new building on Ghasrodasht Street in 1985.

 

The Educational clinics of this building started to work with 70 dental units and gradually the number of dental units was increased to 120 up to the year of 2003. During this time, in addition to training students in general dentistry courses, the number of faculty members and the provision of facilities and equipment increased, thereafter, training in postgraduate courses in Endodontics and Restorative Dentistry has begun, and the number of postgraduate courses has increased. Finally, with the determination of the authorities and all the efforts and activities, the building and the extensions were inaugurated in 2004.

 

During these development phases, the physical space available increased from 7000 square meters to approximately 18500 square meters, and all educational and clinical departments were established for postgraduate and general dentistry courses in separate clinics.From a collection of eleven different dental departments, this faculty now has postgraduate departments in all disciplines.

 

All Educational and Research activities of the Faculty are optimally provided using 270 Dental units under the supervision and guidance of faculty members in the departments of Endodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Prosthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery , Oral Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Orthodontics, Oral Health and Community dentistry, Dental Materials and Dental Implants. Facilities and essential equipment’s in departments, clinics, classes, amphitheaters, laboratories, pre-clinics, dental laboratories, internet center, and audio-visual amenities are offered to all students. Moreover, library, reading room, printing, photocopy, bank, sports ground, buffet, dining room, Prayers etc. are also available to students. There are also three research centers namely Orthodontic Research Centre, Biomaterial Research Center, and Oral and Dental Disease Research Center. Shiraz Dental Journal was commenced in 1999 with the help of faculty professors in Persian language and from 2007 was published in both Persian and English.

 

From 2011 this journal has and only published English articles. The development of educational departments and addition of a fellowship department in oral biology as well as the establishment and operation of dental research centers, the establishment and operation of outpatient operating rooms for patients who need dental services under anesthesia, are proceeding.
